G-AKLM received it's certificate of air worthiness 28th July 1949 and entered the King's Cup race on 1 August at Elmdon, where it averaged 169 mph round the course but was unplaced. I t went on to be a demonstrator for Short Brothers and Harland. In October 1949 it began a demonstration tour of Scandinavia, but on the 15th it crashed in fog at Lindesnes in Norway, the pilot D. G. McCall and his crew (including George Puddicombe of Shorts' sales staff) being killed. G-AKLO replaced G-AKLM as the European demonstrator. |
