I flew twice in G-ANOK with my father Stanley Prior piloting it around 1955. It was then being flown from Luton airport long before it became a National/International airport. It was then an aerodrome as you'll see from the hangars in my photo. Runway was grass then. During a difficult landing around that time when the plane was being piloted by a trainee it took a nose dive and snapped the nose wheel and broke the propeller off! I took a broken section of yellow prop tip to school to show it off. G-ANOK George Able Nan Oboe King was the property of Smiths Aircraft Instruments back then and it was eventually sold to someone who flew it regularly to Norway and back to Scotland. It ended up in the East Fortune Museum in Scotland for a time when it was retired from service and now is laying in a barn on the Scottish Borders and no possible chance of restoration and re flying. A sad end to a very nice aeroplane. I have fond memories of it, even though I was only 7 or 8 years old at the time. |
