All Grumman Albatrosses had factory OEM serial numbers between G-1 and G-464; all other "serial" numbers improperly used for civilian registrations are actually either former military USAF serial or USN Bureau of Aeronautics (aka “Bu”) numbers. In the case of N116AG, its supposed “serial number” as currently registered is actually an incorrect truncation of its former USAF serial number 51-7164. It was also once identified as USN BuNo. 142429, but per FAA Advisory Circulars AC21-12b and AC21-13, a former military aircraft such as this is NOT supposed to be registered with the FAA using one of those former military serial numbers, if as it does it actually has an OEM (i.e. Grumman) serial number – it is supposed to be registered using that OEM factory serial number – i.e. “G-214” |
