| In spite of its current registration and FAA "approval" of Limited Type Certificate no. L-25-2 in Nov. 1947, there is no such thing as a "Grumman" FM-2 Wildcat. The FM-2 designation used by the US Navy was specifically intended to differentiate the Wildcat fighters actually built by Grumman and designated as the F4F series from other Wildcats like this one - that was actually built (i.e. manufactured) by the Eastern Aircraft division of General Motors. Per FAA regulation 45.13(a) all civilian-registered aircraft are supposed to be identified on the basis of who actually "built" them, not necessarily by who originally designed or built them previously. As such, all FM-2 aircraft should be properly identified as "Eastern Aircraft" or "General Motors" FM-2 Wildcats. |
