Three American medical volunteers, including two from California, died Friday when their small plane crashed near the Mexican border.

The aircraft left Brownfield, Calif., Friday (September 8, 2006) and was trying to land at a military airport near the city of Ensenada when it hit a factory wall and exploded, police said.

The victims were part of a two-plane convoy of Christian missionaries who were planning to provide medical aid to the needy in Mexico.

A technical glitch was believed to have caused the crash, NBC4 reported.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City identified the victims as 76-year-old dentist Merlin James Larson of Palm Desert; nurse Brianne Nicole Shelton, 25, of San Marcos; and pilot Robert McEneany, 57, of Las Vegas.
