Grumman 5423L was involved in an accident Super Bowl Sunday, 2009, in Payson, AZ due to a combination of weather and pilot error. Fortunately, there were no fatalities; both pilot and passenger survived the crash without injury and only a couple scratches. The aircraft attempted to land with strong variable winds and ultimately landed with a tailwind. After bouncing on the runway several times, the pilot attempted a go-around after realizing the aircraft was not going to stop by the end of the runway. A strong gust of wind forced the aircraft off the runway, into the windsock, through the east airport boundary fence, breaking up and rotating 360 degrees down the hill at the threshold of runway 06. |
