I soloed this airplane on July 30th, 1967 with 10 hours and 36 minutes dual time. My instructor was Russell Zangger at his private 4 runway (3 grass and 1 paved) airport near Larchwood, Iowa. Many local pilots started their flying careers piloting this simple aircraft meticulously maintained by Russell. Instruction cost in 1967 was $9.00 per hour wet with instructor but $10.00 per hour if a student shut the door on the seatbelt. The first 45 minutes of the first lesson were spent on teaching the student how to correctly enter and exit the left seat. Great times were had by all and Russell was an excellent instructor as was his ground school instructor wife Dolly. |
