Wildcats built by the Eastern Aircraft Division of General Motors were designated FM-1 and FM-2. The FM-2 was the ultimate development of the substantially revised Wildcat design. Armor plating and self-sealing fuel tanks in the FM models were some of the improvements. FM-2s were built from September, 1943 to August, 1945; by then 4,777 FM models had been delivered. The FM-2 was the first US Navy version of the fighter to standardize on the Wright Cyclone 1,350 Hp radial engine. US Navy Wildcats were phased out in favor of the far more capable Grumman F6 Hellcat in late 1943, but Britain's Fleet Air Arm continued to operate the Wildcat until the end of World War II. The British called their Wildcats 'Martlets' until January 1944 when they changed the name to Wildcat. N5833 is an Eastern Aircraft Division-built FM-2 Wildcat, now experimental classed. |
