I learned to fly in Tri-Pacer N7100D in Breckenridge, Texas back at Stephens County Airport back in 1978. At that time, AVgas was around $0.75 per gallon, and I rented the Tri-Pacer for $15/hour wet. There were not a lot of people interested in learning to fly in that area back then, and even fewer that wanted to rent the 'Flying Washbucket', as the FBO called the Tri-Pacer. As a result, I got in the habit of not bothering to reserve the plane, just drive in and fly out. I put about 70 hours on the plane. The only time I had any apprehensions in the plane was on my dual cross-country. The instructor wanted to fly into Sheppard Air Force Base in Witchita Falls, but the tower couldn't paint us on radar (there was no transponder in the Tri-Pacer at that time. -- Pete (the FBO manager) installed one after that flight). We were about ten miles out, and finally had to abort the approach when the tower finally spotted us and had to direct us away from a flight of F117's. I hope the current owner continues to get a lot of satisfaction from the old beauty! |
