N739NU crashed today (07Mar-2k6), early in the afternoon just after a student-pilot performed a touch-n-go maneuver. The aircraft hit a powerpole and went down in the street adjacent to Compton airport.

Man, she was a great aircraft. This is unbelievable, since its the second aircraft that I've flown within the last year that has crashed! I've got some 15-20 hours on her doing some short hops or sight seeing flights. She was old and a little banged up (off trim and stuff), had a hard time landing nicely, but the engine was pretty good, and I always felt comfortable flying her. sad thing those days are over now... I'm glad the guys at least walked away from the crash, but the reason is still unknown at this time. Safe flying everybody...

Shame to hear what happened. After getting my Private ticket in Bayport, NY I immediately transferred over to the "big" planes at ISP. My first C-172 was N739NU -- I had to double-check my logbook, but it's hard to forget the tongue-twister. That plane was awesome and I flew it all over Long Island Sound and over to Connecticut.
