My father learned to fly during the summer of 1941 at Scott and Coulter Flying Services, Compton Airport, near Los Angeles.
His logbook shows that most of the time he trained in a Porterfield with a 65 HP Lycoming Engine, Ident No. NC 27278.
I believe this could be the same plane that he trained in.
