I flew this aircraft for several hundred hours in 1968 on a night airmail "Star" route between Midland, TX (MAF) and Dallas Love Field (DAL). At the time, BE18s were having a series of in-flight lower spar cap failures. On climb-out from DAL in perfectly smooth air, there was a humongous bang from the center section. I thought I was dead and just closed my eyes and waited for the wingtips to kiss...and nothing happened. Never did find out what that noise was.
