This Piper PA-48 is now at the National Musem of the U.S. Air force in the R&D hanger.

The aptly-numbered N481PE is the first prototype of the PA-48 Piper ENFORCER, a modernized COIN (counter-insurgency) version of the North American P-51D MUSTANG; and one of the most unusual programs undertaken by Piper. First flight of N481PE was on 9 April, 1983.
The PA-48 ENFORCER was longer than the P-51D, had a larger tail, wingtip fuel tanks and a four-bladed propeller from a Douglas A-1D SKYRAIDER (which used a Wright R-3350 radial of 3,020 Hp). An Avco Lycoming T55 series slim turboprop of 2,455 shp was fitted. The ENFORCER did not have the P-51D's belly intake for cooling, losing one of the most distinctive characteristics of the MUSTANG design. The canopy, however, was a bubble canopy, as the P-51D. The second ENFORCER prototype flew in July, 1983.
