I bought N5552V, new, in December 1980. She was still unpainted thus I chose the color, Red on White with a Blue stripe. If memory serves me, I chose the 1981 pattern which was different than 1980.
I picked her up in Strother Ks on Jan 16 1981 and flew her back to Cessna field in Wichitaw for the night, and then home to Atlanta/Fulton Co. (FTY) on Jan 17.
It was 15 degrees with 3 feet of snow when the taxi dropped us that Saturday morning with no one in sight. Cessna had given me a number to call is she wouldn't start. We had the taxi wait till she did! I lifted off with 124.9 hours in my log book and when I sold her in 1987 I had over 800.
Best landing Cessna ever made! Heavier than a 172 so she didn't float. 30 degrees of flaps on final, drop 40 over the numbers and she would roll on without a squeak!
Only real problem (not counting mud dobber wasps plugging the pitot tube) was a persistant fluid leak in the landing gear the dealer couldn't find. Had a failure to retract in '81 or '82. They dropped back down and locked but burned out the hydraulic pump. After that I included the gear dipstick in the preflight. I wasn't on the checklist.
