The J-21A, was at first powered by an inline piston engine (Swedish version of DB 605B). The later R-version was powered by a DH Goblin jet engine. As no example of the R-version survived, a conversion of J-21A-3 serial 21286 took place in the late eighties and was painted as serial 21463 code red N.
