On September 2, 1998 this MD-11 operating as Swissair Flight 111 from New York to Geneva crashed into the Atlantic Ocean during an emergency approach to Halifax, Nova Scotia. All 229 men, women and children on board were killed and two memorials to the victims were later established by the government of Nova Scotia.
