N321AX crashed in a ranch farm field about a mile and a half short of NAWS Pt. Mugu NTD for landing there about 1215 hours on 18 May 2012. Operated by Airborne Tactical Advantage Co. as a contractor-operated aggressor aircraft supporting the US Navy in training exercises, it was flown by a 57 year old ex US Navy Captain pilot, who was the sole fatality. The aircraft was observed on fire and broke up in flight. Death was attributed to blunt-force trauma. The aircraft was written off (damaged beyond repair) by ATAC. The pilot flew in a 28 year career in Naval Aviation, including serving as Captain of an aircraft carrier.
