Q59 Photo

Fremont airport in the SF Bay Area when it was at its peak, was closed in May of 1986. Was a no frills grass roots airport that didnt even have runway lights, only relectors. They worked just fine but planes without lights, then it could be interesting.

Q59, Fremont airport (Calif) at closure in 1986. Strange twist-both planes seen in pic, ( once owned both ) they ended their flying days in Florida not far apart. The 150 due to storm damage & the 172 crashed into the water (9-23-12) off the Florida coast., photo by S B J

Q59, Fremont airport,Calif. Old runway 31L,31R was a nice dirt runway. This was also the starting point for many (15 years worth) of my flying adventures! They sure were good years to be in general aviation.Would not trade them for anything!, photo by S B J

Q59, Fremont airport ,Calif. Picture is two years after closure. For such an active airport it was remarkable safe. There was several accidents, but only one was a fatal (8-8-75) and was due to a mechanical issue.Fremont had a lot of good pilots and instructors., photo by S B J

Q59, Fremont airport,Calif. soon after its 1986 closure.Due to the short closure notice and removal of planes and hangars, there were some angry owners. An X on a runway, I have seen to many in my time. View is east., photo by S B J

Q59, Fremont airport in Calif. did flood from time to time when Mother Nature was overly generous.South end planes (left) were OK but north end was 3-4 feet deep. Not so good. View is to the SW., photo by S B J
